Event Details

Join TAG Fine Arts and Londonist.com for an evening exploring the many forms and uses of London maps.

Panelists include:

  • Matt Brown, Editor of Londonist and instigator of the Museum of London's recent Hand-drawn London mapping exhibition (Chair)
  • Stephen Walter, the acclaimed artist famous for his detailed hand-drawn maps of London
  • John Kennedy, London taxi driver and chronicler of London's minutiae
  • James Cheshire, digital mapper and Lecturer in Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL

The speakers each create or use maps in very different ways. Stephen maps his own personal experiences of the capital to create dense but beautiful works of art. John relies upon a mental map of the city, created through years of studying and employing The Knowledge. James, from an academic setting, melds data with maps to create digital visualisations of London. On the Londonist website, Matt pulls all of this together with regular articles about the different forms of mapping in the capital.

Entrance to this event is free, but must be pre-booked. Space is very limited, so sign up early. The gallery is small, so later arrivals may have to stand.

This event supports The Art of Mapping, a new exhibition of artistic maps curated by TAG Fine Arts at the Air Gallery (14-26 November). Attendees of this event will also get to see the exhibition.

The exhibition and event are part of the London Mapping Festival.
